AirPort is the name given to a series of products by Apple Inc. Using the Wi-Fi protocols (802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n and 802.11ac). These products comprise a number of wireless routers and wireless cards. The AirPort Extreme name was originally intended to signify the addition of the 802.11g protocol to these products. The general steps to configure and use an AirPort network are the following: Install and configure the Base Station (AirPort Hardware Access Point or an Airport-equipped Mac OS X machine). Install AirPort cards in the machines you want to connect to the AirPort network. Configure those machines to use the AirPort network.
Much like everything else about OS X, connecting to a wireless network is painfully easy. But if you’re not familiar w/ OS X, and need to walk someone else through it, the following steps might prove helpful.
Once you’re there, navigate down to Network - Wi-Fi or Network - Airport depending on how old your MacBook and version of OS X might be, and you’ll see the current connection over on the right. In my case, I’m using Wireless-N. If the Airport icon located on the top right corner of the Mac OS X desktop screen is not visible, you will need to turn on AirPort: Select the Apple Button located at the very upper left corner of your screen and choose System Preferences. From the drop-down list to open the System Preferences Window. In the 'Internet & Wireless' section, select Network to open the Network window. From the left-hand menu, select AirPort. The right-hand menu will change to AirPort options.
- When connecting your Mac to a wireless network, one of the first things you’ll want to do is make sure that the AirPort icon is enabled in your Menu bar. If it’s already there, please skip down to Step 5.
- Select the Apple Button (very upper left corner of your screen) and choose System Preferences… from the drop-down list. From there, select Network.
- Select you AirPort entry, and click the Configure… button.
- Make sure the Airport tab is selected from the top menu, and then place a check in the box labelled Show AirPort status in menu bar
- Click the AirPort icon in your menu bar, and you should be presented with a list of visible wireless networks. Select the network you want to join.
- If the network requires a password, you’ll be prompted to enter it now. If it doesn’t, you should automatically connect.
- When you’re connected, the AirPort icon will change from a ‘light grey’ color to a solid black. The number of solid black lines indicates the signal strength (more black bars = stronger signal). That’s it!
